Description Papers, ca. 1861-1900, including diaries, letters, paroles, and photographs of James B. Wiggins of Fayette County, Pennsylvania. The letters, 1861-1864, were written to family and friends regarding troop movements, battles, and camp life. The diaries, 1863-1864, recount troop movements and battles in West Virginia and southwest Virginia; news of the war; camp life; news of fellow soldiers; notes on the weather; supplies and stables for the horses; and prices of eggs. Includes information on the battles of Antietam (Md.), Second Battle of Kernstown (Va.), and Winchester (Va.), and troop movements in North Carolina and West Virginia. Transcriptions are available for both the letters and diaries.

Biographical/Historical Note James B. Wiggins (1835-1919) of Fayette County, Pennsylvania, was the son of Isaac Wiggins. He served with the 2nd West Virginia Cavalry, Company L. He married Elizabeth Freeman (d. 1880) in 1869 and Sarah Jane Downard in 1885.
