Alternative: [City of Lynchburg, Virginia / compiled from topographic map sheets and information obtained from Department of Public Works]
Abstract: The maps in this collection are part of the Virginia Historical Inventory (VHI), a project of the Virginia Writers' Project (part of the WPA) to create detailed reports documenting the architectural, cultural, and family histories of thousands of 18th- and 19th-century buildings in communities across Virginia.
Abstract: Field workers for the Virginia Writers' Project annotated maps to show the locations of the buildings and sites surveyed for the project. This collection consists of reproductions of the original maps; the Library of Virginia's Digital Library Program staff recreated the annotations of the field workers on "clean" versions of the maps, creating a unique map for each of the following categories as needed per locality: cemeteries, church buildings, commercial buildings, dwellings, historic sites, industrial buildings, mills & mill-work, public buildings, school buildings, and taverns (inns).
Abstract: Each survey report and associated descriptive catalog record should indicate a map location number. The user should record the county or city location of the structure, as well as the type of structure. Once those items are determined, the user will find the structure number annotated in red on the appropriate map.
